Q1: What is Global Vikas Trust (GVT) and what is its mission?

GVT is a Mumbai-based not-for-profit organisation founded by Mayank Gandhi. We work to transform rural India by increasing the incomes of small and marginal farmers by helping them adopt high-value crops and sustainable agriculture practices (horticulture, sericulture, etc.). We provide training and guidance to farmers from across the country at their state-of-the-art farmer training centre - Krishikul in Sirsala, Beed District, Maharashtra. We also undertake water conservation interventions including river rejuvenation and construction of structures to help rural communities address their water requirements. Our goal is to achieve rural economic transformation to help India regain its global economic standing.

Q2: How does GVT help farmers earn more income?

GVT guides farmers to shift from low-value traditional crops (e.g., soybean, cotton) to high-value crops (horticulture, sericulture, etc.) using a cluster-based cultivation approach. It provides quality saplings at subsidized rates delivered to the farmgate, end-to-end training and guidance by agronomists, soil enhancement inputs, and supports market linkage efforts for better price realisation. This results in significantly higher yields and incomes for the farmers participating in the livelihood programme.

Q3: What is the proven impact of GVT’s livelihood program?

Since 2019, GVT has supported over 31,000 farmer families across 5,000+ villages in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat have benefitted with increased income from their livelihood by participating in our livelihood programme. Farmers have planted over 7 crore fruit trees across 44,000 acres till date and achieved multi fold increase in their annual income from their cultivation. An independent impact assessment conducted by TATA Institute of Social Science (TISS) in 2024 showed that the average annual income per acre of farmers participating in our livelihood programme increased from ₹38,700 to ₹3,93,000 (about ~10x).

Q4: What water conservation work does GVT do?

GVT rejuvenates rivers, builds check dams, and installs its innovative groundwater recharge shafts called the Global River Aquashahts (GRAs) to improve the groundwater table. The interventions till date have helped conserve hundreds of crores of litres of water in drought-prone regions, improving the availability and accessibility of water for household consumption and farming requirements.

Q5: What is GVT Krishikul and how does it help?

Krishikul is a world-class farmer training centre in Sirsala, Beed, which was established October 2024 with the support from Motilal Oswal Foundation. It offers practical, hands-on training and guidance to farmers on sustainable agriculture practices, adoption of horticulture crops, soil management, water management, crop care, etc. It has demonstration plots, gaushala, and sericulture shed to help farmers understand different aspects of farm resource management. Over 19,000 farmers have visited the centre since its inception.

Q6: How transparent and accountable is GVT?

GVT maintains strong governance with a proprietary ERP system for end-to-end traceability, geotagging, real-time monitoring, and detailed reporting. It has all the necessary registration and documents including 80G, 12A, FCRA registrations, etc. and provides CA-verified utilisation certificates, donation receipts, monthly reports, harvest reports, annual reports, and impact updates.

Q7: How is donor money utilized?

The funds provided for our farmer livelihood programme gets utilised towards providing support to the farmers by way of extending quality saplings, complete training and guidance right from land preparation to harvest stage, and support with market linkages. As an organisation we follow a standardised per-sapling costing framework (₹25/sapling) across all projects to ensure uniformity and accountability. Our donors receive detailed project reports with the list of beneficiaries, geotagged photos, farmer-wise data, and success stories.

Q8: Do you have tax benefits for donations?

Yes. All donations to GVT qualify for 80G tax benefits in India. GVT also has 501(c)(3) equivalent certification for donors from the USA and an FCRA registration to receive foreign contributions.

Q10: What makes GVT’s approach unique?

GVT takes a cluster-based cultivation approach, bringing small and marginal farmers in groups and helping them adopt high-value crops. By focusing on the outcomes of the project, engage with the farmers end-to-end right from land preparation to post harvest sale. We follow stringent sapling selection criteria, provide the saplings at subsidised rates at farmgate, extend on-ground training with 24x7 calling support, undertake continuous monitoring, and support with forward market linkages.

Q12: How does GVT ensure scalability?

The model developed by GVT has enabled it to be replicated across geographies and crops. The proof of the same lies in the part where the model has been implemented across 5,000+ villages with over 31,000 farmers cultivating different crops. Additionally, farmers in the rural communities who witnessed the benefits of the model have organically adopted the crops (demonstration effect leading to organic adoption by non-supported farmers). The farmer training centre Krishikul provides training and guidance to farmer groups and organisations wanting to adopt the model. GVT has also actively worked with other organisations wanting to adopt the model in their geographies by extending complete know-how and understanding.

Q13: What social impact beyond income does GVT create?

Aside from the plantation programme and water conservation programme, GVT has been engaged in various social interventions and initiatives include Daaru Bandi Movement (movement against consumption of illicit liquor), Hunda Bandi (dowry-free mass weddings) every year we support community weddings for couples from socio-economically weaker sections of the society and provide them with resources to begin their lives together. During times of distress, GVT has been the first to respond to the challenges of the people and our flood relief campaign is one such example wherein over 6,200 families across 34 villages were supported with 6 weeks worth of food and consumables in flood affected regions. We also help the poor with their healthcare requirements by helping them receive support under different government schemes.

Mayank Gandhi was an international urban planner (part of the Advisory Body of Chicago-based CTBUH working in developed countries. It was in 2003 that he decided to work on transformative reforms in public life that would bring justice to the common Indian.

He was part of the team that collaborated with Anna Hazare in the drafting and passing of the Maharashtra RTI. As part of his zeal to transform the country, he started the India Against Corruption (IAC) movement along with Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare. This historical nationwide movement motivated Indians of all ages and backgrounds to make their voices heard about the state of governance of the country. This movement then morphed into the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), of which he was the National Executive member.
